Matthew wearing the neck brace the day after. |
So here's the details: Jacob volunteered to take Matthew to basketball practice while I took the girls to piano. When they got to the YMCA, Jacob parked, Matthew jumped out and did what we've asked him not to do- run through the parking lot. Anybody that knows him knows that he's full of energy and enthusiasm. He just wanted to get to practice. Well, he didn't look well enough the last parking isle and was hit by a couple in a pickup truck. Just at that moment two men were leaving the Y, one of which was an ER doctor, imagine that! They witnessed the accident and immediately took care of him. By the time Jacob came close, they had covered Matthew with their coats and put one under his head and had called 911. Did I say that Matthew was a fast runner? He obviously was way ahead of Jacob!
Jacob called to tell me what happened and told me that he thought Matthew would be alright. I asked him to ride with Matthew in the ambulance and then asked Sarah to take care of the girls piano lessons. In the emergency room I found Matthew lying on a gurney with a neck brace. I teased him that he was just trying to get some extra attention. My heart went out to him as he told me his version through tears. I think everything got to him.
My hand is encircling the bump. It was much bigger last night. |
The top of the bump. |
I've had quite a few questions. It's amazing how fast news travels with our digital networking! Thank you all for your concern!!So here are answers to the most common questions:
1. Is he alright? Yes, but sleeping on his back is a little painful. The knot on his head is enormous. We've had bumps in our house, but nothing this big.
2. Is he allowed to do anything? He's only restrained from running, jumping, wrestling, playing ball, etc. for a couple of days. Don't worry, his other favorite activities are TV & video games. He stayed home from school today and will go back tomorrow.
3. Did he black out? No
4. Did he throw up? No
5. Does he have a concussion? No, but if he does it is very slight and doesn't require any extra attention.
6. Does he have any other cuts or bruises? Yes, a little scratch on his elbow and what looks like rug burn on one hip, about the size of a cell phone.
7. How is the driver handling it? They were extremely concerned and called the house last night. I talked with the wife this morning and put her mind as ease.
8. Has he learned his lesson? Time will tell.
