cleaning discovery!

I have to share one of the many things I've discovered lately by following the "Fly Lady".    First off, we live in an old house (not cute old, 70s old) that is falling apart on a regular basis.  Our bathrooms are some of the more unsightly areas.  I've struggled keeping them clean especially since I don't want to be in there.  One of my least favorite jobs is the shower.  I've bought multiple curtain liners only to have them get moldy (the air circulation is awful).  I would try and soak them in a tub of hot water and bleach on a monthly basis but it was tedious to get them down and put them back up.  Once, I got distracted by the kids (go figure) and forgot that I was filling the tub with water.  When I remembered, I ran in to find the floor covered in water, oops!

Well, Fly Lady once commented that she wiped down her shower every day.  Really!  I tried it but it didn't quite work for me.  The rag was always wet and I didn't want to hang it in the shower.  I used a window squeegee but it doesn't work on the curves.  Then one day, while reading Fly Lady emails, she commented to just use shampoo or soap and what you have.  I looked in the shower and realized that I could try the synthetic loofah (the poof ball no one uses) and the huge bulk store shampoo that I bought for the kids.  Miracle of miracles, it works like a charm and takes no time at all.  One day I do the walls and the next day I do the shower curtain. The loofah dries quickly so I don't mind it being in the shower.  I no longer have to buy a new shower curtain or use bleach because the mold is gone and my shower shines  (as much as a 40 year-old shower can).  I have taught the kids to do the same, although they are on a slower learning curve, their tub is looking better.  Sure beats hanging over the side of the tub scrubbing with something that burns your nose when you breath.  Ah, simple joys!

Sorry, no pictures, the bathrooms are still too ugly to share a look. :)

  1. I throw my shower liner in the wash with a couple of white towels for "exfoliating" the gunk and a little bleach and LIQUID detergent.
