Happy 50th wedding anniversary!!

In our fast paced world it seems that relationships are as well.  They seem to fizzle and lose their staying power before they even build a foundation.  So it is refreshing to experience couples who have worked through the sparks, and the good and the bad to strengthen their love and commitment.

My parents are such people.  They've dedicated themselves to each other and the happiness of their family often sacrificing their own needs and comforts.  Due to their persistence and love, they are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

We have a beautiful belief that when couples not only make promises to each other but also to God then they keep those promises, they will be blessed to be together forever.    So while I wish them many more happy years together, I also have a great hope that they will be together forever.

I'm so grateful for their love and dedication!

We've had the pleasure to celebrate them in Maui this week.  If you watch till the end of the video you'll see some photos from our snorkeling excursion today.

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!!

Love you both!!

It's Sarah and Mom's birthday today!!

On my mother's birthday, 27 years ago, we were blessed with our first
daughter.  The name Sarah, meaning "princess", stood out to us as the perfect name for her.
She would rule our hearts for sure.  We are so grateful to have her
in our family.  We've learned a great deal from her compassion, spunk, determination,
faith, hard work and love, to name a few.

Happy birthday sweet Sarah!
Love you bunches!

And to the woman who had this birthdate first, I want to tell her how much
I love her.  She is one of the strongest women I know.
I'm so grateful for her sacrifice and love all these years.
Happy birthday Mom!!
I love you!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

I sure am grateful this Mother's Day to have my mom around.  The last two months have been filled with concern for her welfare.  She was feeling chest pains, so she went into the doctor to have it checked out.  Much to her and Dad's surprise, he didn't let her leave.  Instead he told her that he was admitting her into the hospital for quadruple bypass surgery as soon as a bed was available.

I know my parents were trying to protect me by telling me not to come until she was out of the hospital.  Surely none of us really knew what this all entailed, but we had an idea.  You see, her father and brother both had the same surgery, and eventually died of heart disease. But that was them, and this was us.  I was in a state of shock, when thankfully, my dear husband insisted that I leave right away and be there for the whole shebang.  He was right.  So we booked a flight and I was gone.  I sure am glad that I did!

I had the privilege of being there for my parents in their time of need,
which is something they have always done for me.

I was able to witness my mom's strength, that I've so admired all my life,
evident in her willingness to do the hard things that were asked of her.
I loved seeing so many people love her.  Countless friends from church, the neighborhood, family, and others who know her reached out to her.  They visited, sent cards, flowers and called on a daily basis.  The young girls that she teaches at church even sent a huge banner wishing her to get well soon.  I thought I had taken a picture of it but it must have been deleted.

As scary as it was to have her go through such an ordeal, I never was really scared. It was hard to see her in pain but I had faith that God would take care of everything and he gave me peace.  I learned about faith from my mother.  She has been a pillar of faith throughout my life, even in the hospital.  She leaned on the Lord and He comforted her when she needed it.  And even through the poking and prodding of the nurses we were able to lift our spirits by watching General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

From the generosity of my husband, family and friends, I was able to stay for two weeks.  My sister Julie and her son Chase overlapped at the end and was able to help out for the next week.  There are so many things that I learned from this experience, but I'll save those for another time.
Today, I just want to celebrate the fact that my mom is still here and healthier than before.
She says her goal is to be here for Abby's college graduation which is in about 15 years.  I've no doubt that if she puts her mind to it, it will certainly happen.

Thanks Mom for being my example, friend, mother, and biggest fan!!
I love you!!
Happy Mother's Day!!

Happy Birthday Ladies!!

I know a couple of ladies who need to be recognized for having yet another great year of life!!  My mother and Sarah have been sharing a birthday for 24 years now, although they don't get to do it together much anymore.
I thought I would post a picture of the good old days.  You're welcome!
Happy Birthday!!
I love you both soooo much!!!

It's their day!

It's birthday time for two wonderful ladies in my life!
My mother was born on this day and as a special gift to
her, we welcomed Sarah to the world on the same day.
It's fitting because they are two very strong women with
heaps of compassion for the underdog and love to give to everyone.

Happy Birthday Mom and Sarah!
I love you!

Happy Mother's Day to Mom and my children!

Happy Mother's Day to my wonderful mother who is always there for me.  She has sacrificed countless hours on my behalf with no thought of herself.  I've always held her up as a great example of selfless service.  She is always helping others and has been quick to defend instead of criticize.  So that voice inside my head that sounds so much like her, is a good thing.
Love you Mom!
And....

(Sorry kids for the old pic.  I had to find one with Jacob in it)
To my wonderful children, being your mother has made me a better person.  I'm grateful for each and every one of you!  I know I started out with the thought of raising happy, healthy, good citizens who have a testimony of Christ but have found that you have raised me to new heights.
Keep being such good examples to me!
I love growing up with you!

Christmas in Utah and talking with our missionary

Merry Christmas from Utah (a day late)!
We have the whole crew here plus my parents.
We've been having a blast here since Saturday night.

The kids all went snowboarding on Monday.  Esther was the only one who skied.  Their muscles are still sore today from the experience.  I stayed home with Abby and took her to Scheels to ride the huge inside ferris wheel and Dad had lunch with the man that helped Sarah get a job interview at the aquarium here.  She got the job!! Yea!!

Christmas Eve we changed the home nativity tradition and went to see it at Temple Square in SLC.  The kids good friend Jared came with us (he's the one with the white knit cap).  He fits right into our family like one of our own.

The great thing about coming to SLC is that we know so many people here that we can visit.  The Hicks are a family that we were friends with in CA, who have since moved here.  We also got to see Dad's brother Robert and his family on Sunday.  Rob and his son Robbie sang in the choir then Robbie gave an excellent talk about Christmas.  After leaving their home, we went to my grandma's house (she's 94!!) to visit with her and my Uncle Doug.  They came over yesterday to our condo to have Christmas dinner with us as well.  Then of course we've got to visit with my sister Julie and her family. They are the reason we are here.  Her daughter Mary (the one sitting on the floor) is getting married tomorrow.  We are so excited for her!  Today we'll spend getting ready for the big day.

Besides the loving spirit of giving Christmas morning, the best time of the day was getting to speak with Elder Whitaker (Jacob) via Skype.  We got to talk with him for an hour!!  We could tell just by looking at him that he is doing really well.  He's been working really hard to share the gospel with others as well as serving them.  As a matter of fact there is a Methodist congregation that just love him and his companion.  Their pastor gives them food all the time.  They have several investigators and 4 baptisms coming up.  It was good to see that he was all smiles.

Merry Christmas!!

Now on to the wedding!

The first of the next generation

My parents are great-grandparents!!
How weird and wonderfully exciting is that?!
My oldest sister's son's wife had a beautiful baby boy today, Kaden.
He's the first great-grand-baby in the family, but I'm sure there are many more to come.
Wait, holy cow! that means I'm a great aunt!  I hadn't thought about that before.
I guess I have to be great at something at some point.
What a wonderful way to become "great".

Rooster surprise

I got a new rooster!
This one was a surprise from my mom.  She has always been a great seamstress but recently she has taken her quilt making to another level.  Everything you see was hand done by her.

She did a great job on the stitching!

He brings a lot of color to the opposite side of the room.
I think my collection's complete.

You can also see in this picture the bookshelves we've added to this room.
There's also a lack of a rug because I had to take the shag rug out.
It was wonderfully soft but was starting to smell like feet, had a toy chest worth of toys hiding in it and was extremely hard to vacuum.  The kids are mourning its departure.
But it won't be long, we'll have a new rug (no more shag) that's on order plus a few other changes to help spruce up the room even more.
