Abby turned 11!

As evidence that this has been one crazy summer, I'm posting about Abby's birthday over a month late.  I knew it would take time to make a video, and since she doesn't have access to social media, procrastination was the solution.  And although we had a family party for her on her birthday, we just had her friend party yesterday.  Phew!  Just in time for school to start this week.  I'm sure looking forward to a schedule but will miss all my "chickees" around the house.

For anyone that knows Abby, you know that she is full of life and love.
This little spunky girl has a big heart that endears her to everyone that meets her.
I'm so grateful that we have her positive energy to lift us up.
Love you Sweet Pea!
Happy Birthday!!

Happy Birthday Dad!!

I have been perfect at staying off social media this week but
have to break my streak briefly to celebrate
the birthday of my dad.

Like everyone else, I've put together a short video of
pictures from his life.  It was surprising at times to see pictures
that I've never seen before and to remember great times.

My dad is one of the most selfless people I know.
He has always put his family first no matter the sacrifice to him.
He is a great example of hard work, inquisitiveness, fun loving, loyalty, and love.
Hope you have a great birthday Dad!!
I love you!!

It's Sarah and Mom's birthday today!!

On my mother's birthday, 27 years ago, we were blessed with our first
daughter.  The name Sarah, meaning "princess", stood out to us as the perfect name for her.
She would rule our hearts for sure.  We are so grateful to have her
in our family.  We've learned a great deal from her compassion, spunk, determination,
faith, hard work and love, to name a few.

Happy birthday sweet Sarah!
Love you bunches!

And to the woman who had this birthdate first, I want to tell her how much
I love her.  She is one of the strongest women I know.
I'm so grateful for her sacrifice and love all these years.
Happy birthday Mom!!
I love you!!

My Sweetie is 54!!

March is catching up with September as birthday month for us.  Esther turned 16, baby A.J. came to meet us, and now the love of my life has turned 54.  It's been amazing to go through photos for this video.  I remember not only what was going on in the pictures, but the feelings I had at the time.  I can honestly say that my love has grown and matured by leaps and bounds for this man.

I've also seen an evolution of sorts in Joseph going from "Mr. Cool" to being openly playful and silly.  I guess having eight kids helps but I believe that it also comes from Joseph purposefully opening up to building relationships with those around him even if it took him outside his comfort zone.  His wanting to be a better person has always been what I've loved about him most.  He's grown into a great father, son, husband and follower of Christ.  I'm so grateful I get to tag along!

I love you Joseph, bunches and bunches!!

Happy Birthday!!
There's one of your favorites, Jackson 5, to help you down memory lane. ;)

Sweet Esther is Sweet 16!!

Today is the day that our Esther turns 16!!

And since this is the year of birthday videos, I've been pouring over her pictures.  So many great memories, I wish I could include them all but you'd be watching a day-long video. One thing that I notice is that she always has a smile on her face (with few exceptions).  She has always had a great love for life, wanting to be involved and part of the action.
She's just a fun person to be around!

You'll see in the video that she had to wear a brace after birth to help her hips grow properly (hip dysplasia).  We thought it would delay her walking but to our surprise, she overcame her brace by crawling and walking in it, with gusto (all with a smile on her face).
That grew into skipping everywhere!  Sooooo Esther!!

Her loving nature is contagious. With her being the oldest at home now, she and  I have become much closer.   I can always count on her for a hug and a kind word.  She has a great way of slowing me down when I'm stressed by telling me she loves me
and wrapping her arms around me.

I'm so grateful to be her mother!!

Happy Sweet 16 sweet Esther!!

I love you!!

Grandma is turning 100!!

Wow!!
Turning 100 is a huge deal!
Unfortunately Grandma doesn't want to celebrate or make a fuss.
So I'll just have to honor her in a sneaky way on this blog, without her knowing until after the fact.
I certainly can't do justice to her life but I've tried to touch
a few high points.  To keep it brief, I also won't be
able to show or mention many family members or others that love her or we would be here all day!
Grandma was born Lenore Neeley
January 22, 1918
the youngest of 6 kids to
Enos Austin Neeley and Eva Ann Ricks
in Felt, Teton, Idaho
on the family farm near Driggs, Idaho
This is a water color that I painted for my Dad of the Neeley family farm.
Growing up there, they didn't have running water or electricity.
I remember going there as a kid.  The river behind it, in those trees, was called "Bitch Crick" but was originally named Beech Creek.  I think the name changed because it was sooooo cold. I can attest to that because Dad took us fly fishing there once. Brrrrrr!
Grandma was the great niece of Thomas E Ricks who was the first
chairman of the board of the Bannock Stake Academy, later named Ricks College in his honor.
In 2000, it became a 4-yr university named Brigham Young University-Idaho
She attended there for a year.
Her mom always made her wear long underwear under the stockings to keep her warm.
But as soon as she and her sister were out of site, they would roll them up and take off the stockings.
Ha, I think clothing battles between mothers and daughters have always existed.

Only 17 months apart, she and her sister Alice were best friends and inseparable.
As a matter of fact, it was difficult to find any pictures with Grandma alone (I had to do some cropping)

Grandma holding her bunny.
In a flapper dress
In front of the farm house.
She says she was never very interested in food,
which accounts for her thin frame.

Although her family didn't have much money, they learned to make due with what they had.
The girls would take old dresses and take pieces from one and put on another to make
a whole new dress.  She said, "Some of the girls were jealous of us because the boys liked us.
They thought we had the cutest clothes they'd ever seen."

She never considered herself very pretty but I think this picture proves otherwise.
Grandma and Grandpa were friends in high school.  They got more serious after graduation
but took a year break when Grandpa said he was taking another girl out.
But after that, it was a done deal.  Grandpa used to say, "I chased her until she caught me!"
They were married September 30, 1939 and were always together for 63 years until Grandpa died of pancreatic cancer in 2002.

I love how he's looking at her here.

Their first child was my father, Jay, born in Rexburg, Idaho.
Because her water broke at 5 months, she was bed ridden for 3 months.  She always described it as sleeping on her head because they propped the bottom of the bed up.
It worked though, and I'm grateful for her sacrifice.
Subsequent pregnancies proved to be difficult too, resulting in many miscarriages.
This lead them to adopt a 2 day-old baby boy, who was "meant to be" theirs,  naming him Doug.
Finally a year and 2 weeks later she was able to give birth to another son, Don.
Jay (Dad) kneeling, Doug (left), Don (right)

Her life revolves around her boys.  She raves about their good natures and the joy it was to raise them.

Doug, Grandma, Don, Jay.  Looks like no one wanted to pose this day.
They are usually much more smiley than this. :)
Grandma has a great sense of humor that keeps everyone smiling.   She's the one that put the bows on Abby's head.
While Grandpa was the quiet gentle type, Grandma was the fun center of attention.  It is her way of making people feel at ease and have a good time.  Her co-workers came to count on her for a laugh.
She wasn't past a practical joke either.  When she was young, she and her sister Alice became upset with their oldest sister.  Because of their age difference, they really didn't know her very well.  She remembers, "We got disgusted
and mad at her when she made us do things when she came home to visit.
Alice and I would take pins and stick them in her dresses hanging in the closet, right where her rear end would be."
Alright, maybe not everyone was smiling, but it sure made me laugh!

No pins for her 5 grandkids! Only hugs and cinnamon rolls.
She loves her 19 great grandkids!!
We make sure and stop by her house every time we are in Salt Lake City.

This is the latest photo taken in Sept when we took Bekah and Matthew to BYU Idaho.
Even though she's lost her strength, her mind is still sharp.
Grandma,
What a great example you've been to us, always thinking of others before yourself.
You've come through hard times with a smile on your face.
Your beautiful home has always been immaculate, warm and open to anyone in need.
Thank you for being so forgiving of me when I broke your beautiful Italian glass set that
Uncle Doug brought back for you.  They were my favorite and I was so sad they were gone.
But although you were sad too, you were vey gracious with me.
Happy Birthday Grandma!!
I love you!!

Bekah turned 21!!

Just a year ago, I was lamenting being able to tell Bekah in person how much I loved her, but couldn't because she was far away on a mission.  Now, she's still far away but going to college.  Thankfully we were able to sing Happy Birthday over the phone and I was able to text her.  And in no time at all she'll be home for Christmas with the other kids and I can hug her in person.  :)

I would have had this video up sooner if it weren't for traveling and getting back into life this week, plus technical difficulties (always!).  But I just want to celebrate this cute, sweet, wonderful girl that is becoming a great woman.  So thankful that I can claim her as mine!

Happy Birthday Bekahboo!!

I love you!!

Happy 52 to Me!!

I want to celebrate my life!!
I've kind of flown under the radar for the last couple of years on this blog
only, really bringing attention to my kids and family.
On a whole, I've taken my own life for granted.

But it has become abundantly clearer to me that my life is a miracle!

Just coming into existence, the odds were stacked against me.
My mother had two babies before me, both of whom never left the hospital.
My parents didn't believe a baby was in their future,
yet here I am.
I survived a major surgery before I was even 1 year old.
Mom married again and gave me the best father and two fun step sisters, yet
was never able to have any more children of her own.
I outgrew asthma and allergies, stepped over a sleeping rattlesnake,
got thrown from a horse, been in two car accidents,
and continued to be healthy and strong.

At times I've wondered why my life has been so blessed.
But through the years I've come to realize that God has a purpose for me.
Part of it is that He needed me to meet a wonderful man and
be prepared to bring 8 wonderful people into this world.
Each of them are their own kind of miracle.

So, today, I'm not going to bemoan my wrinkles and thinning hair
but recognize that they are a sign that I've made it this far!
My miracle birth, health, marriage, motherhood and LIFE
need to be celebrated!!

Happy Birthday Joseph!!

One last birthday for the month of September!

Joseph is turning 28 today so we're gonna celebrate at Disney,
of course.

But with my new found video tool, I've made a video for him,
just like I did for the other boys.
I've so enjoyed going through all our pictures and reminiscing.
Joseph was the cutie that started it all.
What a blessing he has been for us!

Love you Joseph!
Happy Birthday!!

Matthew's the big 18!!

My little boy is all grown up and away from home for his big 18th birthday.  So I won't get to hug him and tell him how much we love him and are grateful he's a part of our family.  Thankfully, he has two sisters, a brother-in-law, and a cousin to be there for him.

Love you buddy!!
Hope you're enjoying being an adult!
Happy Birthday!

Jacob is 24!

Hello!!

Jacob has turned 24 today!  I'm celebrating him with a video of him made
with my new found app Clips by Apple. I was introduced to it
in a Family History class at Education Week at BYU.
After a few days of playing around with it, I finally got it done...
just in time for the end of Jacob's birthday, haha.
Surely, next time, it will be a breeze (fingers crossed).

Jacob, I thoroughly enjoyed pouring over all the pictures I have of you.  There are so many more that I wanted to include but it would have been the length of a feature movie!
Just know that I love that you are a part of our family!!

Love you!
Happy Birthday!

(hope this works)

Happy Birthday to the one who started it all!!

 da

Another year, another birthday for my firstborn.
He's the one that started it all, so I get a little nostalgic and want to look at his baby pictures again.  As I was going through old photos, a lot of memories came flooding back.  I found several of my favorites, which show Joseph with a cute smile, being contemplative, or proud of an accomplishment.  I zeroed in on my all time favorite of when he was three and first starting Joy School.  It has represented to me, all these years, the very core of what I see in him, gentleness, eagerness, loving, believing, hopeful, and kind.  To me, it's almost like looking at his soul.  I've posted it before but decided not to this time because he's now grown into a man and
I don't need his baby picture to see those qualities.
I see it every day when I look into his eyes.  It's always been there.

Now, this doesn't mean that I won't embarrass Joseph in the future with his cherub face babie-ness,
I just won't do it today.

Happy Birthday Joseph!!

Who is this kid?

Who is that?
Who is hiding behind those cool Ray-Bans?
Why, I think it's Matthew!

(He would be totally mortified, as any teenage boy would, that his mother is making him the center of attention by talking about him, but...I'm going to do it anyway.  Cause, in the end, I want him to know that I think he's fantastic!)

I've had the privilege of getting to know him these last 17 years and have come to
recognize greatness in him.
He tries to hide it through teasing, joking and heavy sarcasm, but he's really got a big heart and he feels deeply the connections he makes with others and God.
He's also become quite persuasive, clever and focused (or should I say, more so).
This will be his last year at home before he heads off to college and a life away from us.
Exciting and new experiences await, so I'm grateful for the past 17 years,
and hope the 18th is a great one!
Happy Birthday Matthew!
Love you!!

Happy Birthday Jacob!

This tall dashing son of mine has a birthday today, which deserves a break of my blog silence.
I want him to know how happy it makes me that  he was sent to our home.  Through his example he's taught me about loving life, being patient with others, being a good friend, being brave, obedient, and faithful.  He's made some great choices and learned from his mistakes.  One of his great choices was to marry a wonderful woman, that I know, together they will see many happy birthdays.

Love you Jacob!!
Happy Birthday!!

Last year of being a teenager!

I sure do love this cute Bekah-boo of ours!!
She just makes me smile whenever I talk with her.
Today, was her 19th year on the earth spreading her own brand of happy.
Next year when she enters her twenties, she'll be clear across the country
spreading the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I can only imagine the great things she'll experience between now and then!!
Happy 19th Bekah!!
I love you!!

Matthew's a sweet 16!!

September is a big month for birthdays in our house.
All three of our boys have birthdays.
This week, it's my "Sweetie Petey's" turn.
I don't know why Petey other than it rhymed with sweetie.
Sweetie was the real nick name because he was such a sweet baby.

But now he's "SWEET 16" today!!!
He tries to hide his sweetness with his coolness, but he's not fooling me.
Matthew has a heart of gold.  Growing up, he was one of my most generous children, always thinking of others.  Although it's tough to be a sweet teenage boy, Matthew does
nice things for others without trying to be caught or will make a joke about it.

I just want you to know Matthew that I still see my sweet boy.
I'm so grateful that you were sent to our family!
I hope you enjoy being 16 and everything that comes with it!!
Happy Birthday!!
I love you!!

22 years of Jacob-ness

22 years ago today, this sweet boy came into our lives.
He's been nothing but a joy to have around.
He's always so thoughtful of others and fun to be with
that everyone wants to be around him.
When tensions are high, count on Jacob to crack a joke and have
everyone laughing again.

Happy birthday to my sweet, funny, caring, goofy, smart, talented Jacob!!
I love you!!!

Happy Birthday Dad!!

Look who had a birthday!!
This man, my dad, has survived cancer twice and is one of the most generous men I know.
He's always concerned about taking care of others and would give you the shirt off his back.
Hope you had a great birthday Dad!!
Love you bunches!!

Happy Birthday Ladies!!

I know a couple of ladies who need to be recognized for having yet another great year of life!!  My mother and Sarah have been sharing a birthday for 24 years now, although they don't get to do it together much anymore.
I thought I would post a picture of the good old days.  You're welcome!
Happy Birthday!!
I love you both soooo much!!!

1 week, 2 birthdays

I can't let the day finish without saying a final Happy Birthday to my sweetheart.  He told me a long time ago that he has never liked celebrating St Patrick's day for his birthday, so I've never used it as a theme.  The funny thing is that his assistant at work blew right past that request and decorated his office in green from top to bottom.  And being the good sport that he is, he came home wearing green beads and a leprechaun hat.  I guess it's easier to let go of old notions as you get older.
Happy Birthday dear!!  You're not just getting older, you're getting better!!
Love you!

And while we were in DC last week, I totally ignored blogging (actually it's been a month) which means that I missed sending out a birthday wish to our newest teenager.  Although texting, calling and celebrating happened, I need to include my love for Esther here in my digital "journal".  It's so hard to believe that Esther's 13!!  She's such a sweet girl who still gets giddy with excitement over the simple joys in life.  And ever since she was little, she's been a hugger.  I just hope as we continue down this new phase of life with the hugs in tact.
Happy Birthday sweet girl!!
Love you!
